Comfort Tools for Pregnancy

Pregnancy is incredible but also hard. Here are some tools that helped me!

For nausea

  • Ginger chews: I don't like ginger, but some moms swear by these to reduce nausea.

  • Peppermint gum: Peppermint can also reduce nausea, and sometimes chewing gum tricked my body into thinking I was soothing it with food, which would in turn allow me to stomach actual food. Normal mints were also nice.

  • Ice cold lemon water: If it's not iced, I can't drink it in the first trimester. Sour things are also helpful for nausea, so I would squeeze entire lemons into my 24-oz Owala, just to be able to stay hydrated when everything else made me sick.

  • Sparkling water also helped sometimes.

For sleep comfort

  • C pillow: I didn't think I needed this with my first pregnancy, but boy was I wrong. My husband hated it, but it's the only thing that allowed me to sleep once my belly got big.

  • Wedge pillow: This was a great travel option to provide support.

  • Chewable Tums: I've read that Tums can actually worsen chronic heartburn over time, so don't take these constantly. But if there's a night where your heart burn is climbing up into your throat and making it impossible to sleep, you'll be glad these are on hand. I've tried every natural remedy in the book, and literally nothing else worked for me for any of my pregnancies.

For itchy belly skin

  • Lotion for day time: This rubs in better to avoid staining clothes

  • Heavy salve for night time: I didn't care if my pajamas got some stains, I just needed relief, and this helped all night.

For hemmerhoids

  • Balm: Between pregnancy constipation in my first trimester, baby weight pressure in the third, and the actual act of pushing out a human, hemorrhoids were unavoidable for me. This balm helps.

For your back

  • Find a chiropractor who cares about pregnant women and is Webster certified. Changed my life in my third pregnancy.

  • Belly belt: My back (and whole pelvic region) was so painful in my 2nd pregnancy, this was a must-have to accomplish basic tasks.

For your feet

  • I live in my Birkenstocks under normal circumstance, but they are the BEST shoes for comfort and support in pregnancy, especially when it's hot and your feet are swelling.

For third trimester hydration

  • Red raspberry leaf tea: I brewed mine in a big pitcher and then iced it with frozen strawberries, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and a little honey. It is delightful and has so many health benefits. Check out this post by one of my favorite crunchy mama resources for more information on RRLT! You can get loose leaf or bags. It's really great for women outside of pregnancy too!
